Art Barnz was established in February 2012 as a place for people to come to explore their creativity.
Art Barnz offers art classes for both adults and children as well as 'feel good' workshops which focus on the individuals passion, motivation and enthusiasm for the arts and the creative processes.
What became apparent within the workshops over the last year - particularly the 6 week workshops - was that students used art to explore their inner feelings and expressed themselves to the group by week 3 or 4. This was a natural occurance within a 6 week program. This naturally created a strong bond and safe network for people to share their everyday problems whilst creating a painting. The environment allowed students to open up and share their experiences and make new friends. This occurs frequently in both the adult and children's workshops.
Over the last year Art Barnz has witnessed individuals open up about their marriage, career, grief, children they may have lost, physical and mental illness to name just a few. As a result the 6 week workshops have morphed into what some would call Art Therapy classes.
One of the most common quotes we hear at the Art Barnz is "I did'nt think I could do that?" and "what's next?"
What has occurred in the children's workshops goes something like this... "Natalie (age 8) arrived for her weekly Saturday morning art class at the Art Barnz and as soon as she stepped foot inside the door she burst into tears. That weekend her precious cat, whom she loved very much, was ran over by a car.
Natalie sat next to another student in the class who then began to cry herself because her cousin was in hospital with Cancer. The tutor realised that the art class was going to be slightly different on that day. Together they focused on creating a wonderful painting for Natalie's cat who had recently gone to heaven and a picture for her new friend whose cousin was dying of Cancer. The children left the Art Barnz that Saturday with smiles on their faces and an expression of relief as they had both expressed themselves using art as a tool to understanding their feelings and coming to terms with their grief".
Art is a powerful tool for change. It promotes healing, lowers stress and anxiety, builds positive coping skills, reduces the need for pain medication, increases overall feelings of well being, increases insight, self awareness and self discovery but more importantly it gives each and every one of us a voice ...
"Art is our one true global language. It knows no nation, it favors no race, and it acknowledges no class. It speaks to our need to reveal, heal, and transform. It transcends our ordinary lives and lets us imagine what is possible." Richard Kamler
"Healing Art is being born as we speak. The concept is catching fire, is awakening in people's spirits…Artists, musicians and dancers are realizing their imagery has meaning….that their imagery heals them, others, their neighborhood, or the earth." Michael Samuels
